Some things to remember about the nationals!
1. Do Not Make Hasty Decisions Do not make hasty decisions as far as the nationals are concerned . As Americans first impressions are important, and we are tempted to make rash decisions as to weather or not we like the people, food, or perhaps the country we are ministering to. Guard against hasty, quick decisions. Try to learn to love the people. This is true also in your dealings with other team members. You will find this will make your trip so much easier. 2. Do Not Talk About Finances When talking to the nationals, do not mention money in any way. Do not talk about how much it cost you to come on the trip, how you raised the money, how much we make back home compared to how much the nationals make, how much things cost at home compared to there. It’s best not to talk about money in any way. 3. Do Not Talk About Problems Do not talk with the nationals concerning any problems the team may be having, or you personally may have had or are having at the time. This may cause them to focus on the negative problems rather than the blessing they could receive while we are there. 4. Smile Always smile when meeting people. Do not wait for them to smile first; take the first step and you will find that they will respond. 5. Shake Hands At Every Opportunity! The handshake is a great friend ship gesture. You will win many confidences by simply shaking hands. Children especially like to shake hands; they will be disappointed If you overlook them. 6. Do Not Make Fun Of Anything or Anyone! Laugh with them, never at them! People never appreciate being made fun of, in fact it could cause a resentment towards you and the rest of the team. Do not joke about their money! 7. Be Friendly! Go out of your way to be as friendly as possible to everyone! Wave at people along highway and the streets. Be especially friendly to the kids. 8. Do Not Pity Them You will see poverty, hunger, poor dress, sickness, deplorable sanitary conditions and more. Ignore their condition and love the people. Accept them as they are and let Christ be seen in you. 9. Be Courteous And Gracious You may not know how to say thank you in their language but a slight bow of the head with a smile is a beautiful gesture in any land. 10. Learn Some of Their Language Even a few words will help! |
